Why Is My IRS Balance Still Increasing?

Reviewed June 1, 2025

The most common reasons are ongoing penalties and interest, a new tax period being added to your case, or a payment that hasn't posted yet. Checking your account transcript will usually show which one applies.

Penalties and interest accrue even during active cases

Unless you have specific penalty relief or your account is in a status that pauses collection, interest and failure-to-pay penalties generally continue to accrue on an unpaid balance, even while a resolution case is actively being worked. This is one of the most common reasons a balance keeps climbing.

A new tax period may have been added

If a more recent year's return created a new balance, it can get added to your overall total, making it look like an existing case is getting worse when really a separate liability was introduced.

A payment may not have posted yet

If you made a payment that hasn't shown up in your account, your balance will look higher than it should until that payment posts. Checking your transcript for pending or recent payment activity can clarify this.
