How Can I Tell If My Tax Return Was Actually Filed?
Reviewed June 1, 2025
The most direct way is to check your IRS account transcript, which will show your return as either received and processed, received and pending, or not yet showing at all.
What the transcript shows
Once a return is filed, it typically appears on your account transcript as pending, then moves to processed once the IRS has finished reviewing it. Processing time varies, but paper returns generally take longer than electronically filed ones.
If your return isn't showing at all
It's possible the return hasn't been received yet, was filed to the wrong address or year, or is caught in a longer processing delay. If it's been well beyond the IRS's typical processing window and there's still no record, that's worth investigating — either by contacting the IRS directly or checking with whoever filed the return on your behalf.
Confirming e-file vs paper filing
If you e-filed through software, you should have received a confirmation of acceptance separately from IRS processing. That confirms transmission, but not full processing — the transcript is what confirms the IRS has it in its system and has finished reviewing it.
